Low Carb Margarita

Are margaritas keto?

No, classic margarita recipes or liquor store margarita mixes are not keto-friendly. While tequila and lime juice are keto-approved, orange liquor is not keto-friendly.

Sugar free Margarita

In fact, an authentic margarita has a delicious orange flavor that comes from a high-sugar orange liquor, also known as triple sec or Cointreau.

This liquor is made from a mix of bitter orange peels and sugar beet alcohol. As a result, triple sec is high-carb alcohol that raises blood sugar levels and is not recommended on a keto diet.

How to order a keto margarita at a bar?

Luckily you can order a margarita at a bar or restaurant. Ask for a margarita without orange liquor.

Then, to sweeten your drink, add some stevia drops – the best are orange flavor stevia drops or stir in stevia powder or powdered erythritol.

How to make a sugar-free margarita?

A sugar-free margarita is made with a few simple ingredients. All you need are:

Keto margarita ingredients

  • Fresh lime juice – limes are keto-approved fruits and can be used in keto drink recipes. I recommend using freshly squeezed lime juice. It tastes the best, but you can also use bottled lime juice if preferred.
  • Tequila – any tequila is keto-friendly alcohol, but white tequila-like silver tequila or tequila Blanco is the best choice for a margarita. It’s light in color and provides the best flavor to the drink.
  • Sugar-free powdered sweeteners like powdered erythritol or allulose.
  • Natural orange extract or orange-flavored stevia drops.
  • Crushed ice or ice cubes.
  • Lime wedge – to rub on the glass rim and decorate your drink.

Glass preparation

The particularity of a margarita cocktail is the crust of salt around the margarita glass rim.

To make this, first, rub the rim of the margarita glass with a lime wedge. Then, dip the rim into a shallow bowl filled with sea salt to coat.

You need two ingredients to prepare the margarita glass:

Keto Meal Plan

  • Sea salt – enough to fill a shallow small bowl of 1 cm salt.
  • Lime wedge.

Then pop the prepared glass in the freezer to keep them cold and frosty. Another option is to fill the glass with crushed ice while you prepare the margarita cocktail.

How to make Keto Margarita

Keto margarita recipe preparation

To make your keto margarita, add all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker along with 1/2 cup of crushed ice.

Shake vigorously for 60 seconds, it’s a long time, but it’s needed to make the best keto margarita.

Remove the prepared glass from the freezer, remove the crushed ice from the glass if you added some, and strain the cocktail into the prepared glass.

Skinny Margarita

Nutritional information

This skinny margarita recipe contains only 141 kcal, two times fewer calories than a regular margarita. Plus, this keto margarita contains 5 times fewer carbs than a store-bought margarita, with only 0.7 grams of sugar and 3.4 grams of net carbs.

As a reminder, a classic 3-fl-oz margarita order at a bar contains about 17 grams of sugar and 17 grams of net carbs!

Keto margarita flavors

You can use this recipe to create a range of keto margarita flavors. Below I listed some ideas to use this recipe and create different keto margarita recipe that suits everyone taste.

Keto strawberry margarita

Make a delicious frosty keto strawberry margarita by adding all the ingredients into a blender along with 1/4 cup frozen strawberries.

Blend on high speed until frosty and serve immediately with extra fresh strawberry slices.

This option is perfect to use summer strawberries but adds 3 grams of net carbs per serving from strawberries.

Frosty keto margarita option

You can make a frosty margarita using this keto cocktail recipe. To do so, bring all the ingredients into a high-speed blender along with 1/2 cup of ice cubes. Blend on high speed until it forms a icy margarita. Serve immediately into the prepared glasses.

Spicy keto margarita

You can also add some jalapeno slices into your margarita to spice things up.

First, add the jalapeno slices to the cocktail shaker along with crushed ice. Then, muddle the jalapeno slices with a wooden spoon. Then, add the remaining ingredients and shake.

Sparkling keto margarita

Last option, you can make a sparling margarita by serving this keto margarita with 1/3 cup of sparkling water or orange-flavored seltzer.

If you use seltzer, it adds alcohol, calories and slightly more carbs to the drink. So to keep your sparkly keto margarita low in carbs and calories, choose regular sparkling water or stevia-sweetened sparkling water.

Keto Margarita Recipe

So now you have all the options to enjoy a delicious margarita on your keto journey. Keep in mind that alcohol should always be consumed in moderation.

Even if tequila is keto-friendly, it should be an occasional treat to serve once in a while.

  • Place enough fine sea salt into a shallow bowl to dip the top of the glass rim.
